Little Known Ways to Save Money on Cosmetics

Little Known Ways to Save Money on Cosmetics

So, you may already know a few of the basic rules for saving money on makeup: buy discount cosmetics instead of paying full price, keep an eye on coupons and sales, and choose quality affordable makeup brands instead of making a beeline for the expensive high-end names. But there are some other tips and tricks for saving money on cosmetics that you may not know about. Let’s look at a few!

Dampen your powder sponge before use

Do you have any idea how much of your powder foundation gets wasted every day by getting absorbed into your makeup sponge? Probably not, because that’s the way you’ve always done it! Slightly dampening your sponge before applying foundation will make it absorb less of your makeup, lengthening the life of the product. (Plus, it’ll help your face look smooth and even instead of dry and powdery.)

Don’t throw out broken makeup – fix it

When your lipstick breaks in half or your mascara dries out, you may be tempted to just toss it in the trash, but it actually only takes a few minutes to repair it instead! For lipstick, use a lighter or match to heat up the lipstick that’s still in the tube until the top layer is slightly melted, then reattach the broken end. Heat it slightly around the edges to melt everything together, then refrigerate it for about twenty minutes and it’ll be as good as new! To revitalize mascara, you can add in a few drops of contact solution or baby oil (but only a few or it’ll get too watery), then place the tube in a mug of warm water to loosen anything clinging to the sides.

Use makeup for more than one thing

Who says makeup only has to do what it says on the package? Get creative and multipurpose some of your products. Bronzer and blush can double as eyeshadow, and vice versa. Gel blush can have a dual function as lipstick. BB cream is able to roll together moisturizer, primer, concealer, foundation, sunscreen, and skincare treatments, saving you a ton of money by replacing six products with one. Darker neutral-colored eyeshadows can be swiped below your cheekbones as a contour powder, while light, shimmery shadows can transform into highlighter. It can be exciting to take products you’ve had for years and use them in brand-new ways!

Don’t overdo your daily routine

We all know those women and girls who look like they have a good inch of makeup on their face every day. It doesn’t look good or feel good, it’s bad for your skin, and it makes you go through your supplies a lot faster. Instead, do as much as you can with as little as possible. Use just enough foundation for good coverage and even skin tone, but not so much that it looks cakey. If you’re playing up your eyes one day, choose a natural color for your lips, and likewise, if you have a bold lipstick, go easy on the eyeshadow and mascara.

So, buy discount products and make them last as long as possible – if you focus on conserving makeup and using every last drop, you’ll be able to replenish your supplies much less frequently. And there’s no need to drop hundreds of dollars on dozens of different products if you can make the most of what you already have! Women are famous for multitasking, so why shouldn’t your makeup do it too?

6 Most Popular Discount Cosmetics for 2015

6 Most Popular Discount Cosmetics for 2015

As long as you choose brands with quality ingredients, discount cosmetics can be just as good as higher-priced products. If your New Year’s resolution this year was to save money on makeup, get started with one of these five popular brands in 2015. Most offer affordable makeup all year round, but always check for sales and coupons to maximize your savings even more.

This lowercase brand (that stands for “eyes lips face”) has been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years due to its incredibly low prices for pretty much everything. Spending over $3 on any product is pretty unlikely here – the foundations are pretty much the only thing that run a little more, though even these don’t break out of single digits. If you buy online, take advantage of the periodic coupons they offer; some for January this year are free shipping and 25% off orders of $25 or over.

By now, Revlon is a pretty well-known brand with an established fanbase, attested to by their average four-to-five star ratings on major retailers. Most individual Revlon products can be picked up for under $10, and hitting sales or using coupons is always an option. Their January coupon won’t get you money off makeup itself, but does allow you to save 10% on their beauty tools.

This brand is starting to gain popularity. They have multiple in-house brands such as Measuable Difference, Lashem, Lipo Lotion, and their newest addition of a personal massager that was featured in ExtraTV recently. Chrislie products has also been featured in many subscription boxes recently and starting to gain traction as a affordable makeup company. Their lash enhancing serum has been receiving excellent reviews from YouTubers and bloggers as well. Keep your eyes open for Chrislie products as they expand their product line.

This is one of those in-between brands that can be cheap or expensive depending on which product you’re buying. We like their eye makeup offerings, like the uber-popular Glimmersticks eyeliner ($5) and waterproof mascara ($4.50). They offer highly-rated eyeshadow palettes for $12, which may not be the cheapest ever, but considering that you get eight shades and eyeshadow lasts quite a while, it’s not so bad. Currently they’re offering free shipping on $20+ but their deals refresh periodically.

With sky-high ratings on most online product listings, Almay has created many satisfied customers, and the price is right. One of their most popular products is a shade-smart pressed powder that adapts to your skin tone while hydrating dry skin, for about $9. Their other foundations and concealers are also rated highly, averaging 4.5 stars, while their eye makeup offerings like shadows and liners come in a bit lower. They often offer printable coupons online, although sadly there are none for this January.

This brand doesn’t seem to have a single product rated under four stars, so that’s a win in our book. Lips are one of Rimmel London’s specialties, with their Lasting Finish lipstick topping the popularity charts (at a mere $5). Their Glam’Eyes mascara comes in a close second ($5.50), and most of their foundations and concealers are solid but not extraordinary. Recently they offered a $1 off 1 product coupon, which may not seem like a lot but every little bit helps!

Hopefully the products from these brands will help you be kind to both your face and your wallet in the upcoming year. Never forget to check online for coupons before you head to the stores (or check out online) – it could be the difference between saving dozens of dollars a year and hundreds.

5 Reasons Why Discount Cosmetics Are Worth Buying

5 Reasons Why Discount Cosmetics Are Worth Buying

Beauty often seems to come with a pretty hefty price tag. If you’re jealous of men because they don’t have to worry about spending their cash on cosmetics, you’re not alone. It’s why some women have given up on makeup altogether. But there’s no ignoring how amazing and confident makeup can make you feel, and you don’t want to sacrifice that. So why not aim for the middle ground and buy affordable makeup at discounted prices? Here are five reasons why you should consider discount cosmetics.

1. Save money on the essentials

You know which products you go through the fastest. It’s probably the basic face-prep stuff like foundation powders and liquids, and maybe concealer. These can really add up if you find yourself buying them all the time, or if you are learning how to apply eyeshadow, especially if you’re dropping $20 to $30 a pop on some of the high-end brands. Using discount cosmetics is a good way to lower your yearly makeup bills.

2. Have a large collection without breaking the bank
Buying $100 worth of makeup products at list prices probably won’t get you very much. But $100 worth of discount products gives you some options! If you like to wear several different makeup looks, it helps to have a lot of products available – so get more cosmetics for the same amount you would normally spend by keeping an eye out for price reductions.

3. Experiment with your style risk-free

Did you see a photo or read an article that inspired you to try a new look, but you don’t want to lay down a lot of money for something you’re not even sure you’ll like? Buying marked-down  makeup is a great solution. If you like it, great! If you’re not thrilled with the look, you’re out maybe $5 – so what.

4. Get quality products instead of cheap store bands

Drugstore makeup can be really unhealthy for your skin. It’s often full of impure ingredients that can age you prematurely. If you’re trying to save money, buying good products at discounted prices is a much better option than choosing subpar ones that’ll end up causing breakouts or wrinkles…thus making you need even more makeup than before! Don’t start that vicious cycle.

5. Replace old products without losing money

Certain types of makeup need to be replaced every once in a while. Mascara can harden or get lumpy with time, so get fresh tubes about once every six months. Concealer will last up to a year, and foundation should stay good for 12-18 months. Lipstick will vary, but shouldn’t go bad before two years (periodically check to see if it’s rancid). Eyeshadow and eyeliner are the longest holdouts, with a shelf life of around three years. You don’t want to throw out expensive products, but if you buy discount cosmetics, you can replace them worry-free.

Saving money is wonderful, and getting quality products that help you look and feel beautiful is too. If you switch to discount cosmetics, why not keep track of how much money you’re saving through the year, and then use it to buy yourself something you’ve been wanting for a while? That’s a win-win for sure.

How to Remove Hair Dye From Skin

How to Remove Hair Dye From Skin

It’s an experience that’s been faced by countless women: we finish rinsing out our hair dye, let it dry, and then look in the mirror to admire the gorgeous new color of our hair…and our ears…and our hands…and our foreheads… If you’re using red dye, this can make it look like you were just mauled by a wild animal – not necessarily a good look! Hair dye has a way of getting lots of places other than our hair, and unless we want to hole up in our houses for a few days while we wait for it to wear off, it’s a good idea to learn how to remove hair dye from skin quickly. Here are a few of your options!

The great thing about this method is that toothpaste is something everyone already has on hand! (At least, we hope.) Using your fingers or a cotton ball, spread a thin layer of toothpaste over the stained area, and gently rub it in, with a circular motion, for thirty to sixty seconds. Once you’re done scrubbing, rinse your face with lukewarm water (you’ll probably want to use a washcloth), until all traces of toothpaste – and hopefully dye! – have been removed. If there’s still some dye left, repeat the process. (Toothpaste with baking soda is the most effective.)

This is also a great way to prevent your skin from getting stained in the first place: simply spread some along your hairline and any other easily stained areas before starting the dye job. It should act as a shield against stains. However, if it slips your mind beforehand, just massage it in afterwards with a cotton ball or makeup removal pad. Once the dye begins to tint the jelly, you’ll be able to tell that it’s working, and you can use a wet rag to wipe it off. For really stubborn stains, you can let a thin coat of petroleum jelly sit on your skin overnight and cleanse in the morning.

It’s not only the solution for removing nail polish; it can also be used for hair dye! How to remove hair dye with nail polish: soak a cotton pad or ball with an acetone-based remover and rub it over the skin. Be careful to keep it away from your eyes, and don’t use it on any sensitive areas of your face, as it can be somewhat abrasive. You may want to consider using other methods to remove dye from facial areas, and save nail polish remover for your neck and hands if needed.

Other products that people have used for answering the question of how to get rid of hair dye on skin: baby oil, laundry detergent, hairspray, and vinegar. With so many options out there, there’s bound to be at least one or two that work for you! And since most of these are things you already have on hand, they’re easy and inexpensive methods. Just keep experimenting with these various ideas and you’ll have normal-colored skin again in no time.

Top Eyeshadow Makeup Palettes Jan 2015

Top Eyeshadow Makeup Palettes Jan 2015

A new year brings new makeup trends, styles, and products. Several companies are embracing this opportunity for change by releasing brand-new makeup collections. Check out a few of these exciting new eyeshadow palettes!

Wear Everywhere 8-Pan Palettes by Clinique

Forget just one or two new palettes – Clinique is going all-out by releasing five! The Wear Everywhere collections include eight shades each. Choose from pinks, nudes, greens, greys, and blues. The eight shades are specially chosen to go together perfectly. For example, the “blues” and “greens” palettes also includes browns, whites, and tans, while “pinks” has purples and beiges. The “greys” palette has some of the darker colors like deep brown and black, so it might be a good choice if you’re trying to achieve an eye makeup cat look with eyeshadow.

Eye-Opening Act – Yeux Irresistible Eyeshadow Palettes by NARS

These two six-shade palettes can be used for so many looks. One has light shades like flesh-toned neutral and sable coconut, and also dark colors like midnight gray and deep brown, which are absolutely perfect for a makeup smokey eye look. Vintage gold and reddish shades finish out this palette. The second starts with dusty lilac and sheer white; hunter green, sand, and plum shades round it out. Each shade is deep, shimmery, and gorgeous. To make your eye makeup dramatic, combine one of the colors with the matte black shade.

Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette by Tarte

“Natural” is a perfect description for this palette. Not only are the shades themselves mostly neutral, but the eyeshadow is actually infused with real Amazonian clay. It’s long-lasting and features simple, wistful names like “Free spirit”, “Wanderer”, “Natural Beauty”, and “Dreamer”. Whether you prefer true neutrals like cream, nude, or ivory, or shades with a hint of color like with mauve, pale pink, or dark plum, this palette has what you need.

Fergie Photo Focus Studio Eyeshadow Palettes by Wet n Wild

These two palettes each include ten “intensely pigmented” eyeshadows that come in a range of colors and textures. Both include shimmers and mattes, and while one palette focuses on neutrals, the other includes brighter colors like pink, lilac, and burgundy. Wet n Wild is famous for its all-day coverage; it’s always great to be able to wear eye makeup without having it smudge or fade throughout the day.

Monarch Eyeshadow Palette by Kat von D

If you’re looking for a bit more of a “pop” than neutrals deliver, but aren’t all about bright, wild colors, this lovely, warm palette should suit you well. The shades are rich and deep, ranging from deep orange to glitter gold to pearl brown. “Dawn to dusk” coverage keeps it looking fresh, and vitamin infusions help protect your eyelids. The story behind this palette is just as interesting as the colors themselves; Kat von D says it was inspired by the metamorphosis of the butterfly.

It’s definitely an exciting time in the makeup and fashion world; January is always a perfect excuse to change up your look and start fresh. We’re excited to try these palettes, and we hope you are too!
